An aortic dissection is a serious and often deadly condition. It happens when there is a tear in the wall of the aorta—the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. When this tear occurs, blood leaks into the layers of the aorta, causing it to split apart. If not treated quickly, the aorta can rupture, which often leads to sudden death.

The symptoms of an aortic dissection can look like other health problems, which makes it hard to diagnose. People often feel sudden, severe chest or back pain that may feel like tearing or ripping. Other signs include shortness of breath, fainting, trouble speaking, or weakness in the legs. Because these symptoms are similar to those of a heart attack or even stress, doctors may not recognize the true problem right away.  It’s important that they are checking for them though and a part of the standard of care.

Sadly, delays or mistakes in diagnosing an aortic dissection are more common than they should be. A person may be sent home or treated for the wrong condition.
