Intubation is a medical procedure used to help a person breathe when they can’t do it on their own. It involves placing a tube down the throat and into the windpipe to keep the airway open. This is often done during surgery, in emergency situations, or when someone has trouble breathing because of illness or injury.
Intubation is usually safe when done correctly, but unfortunately mistakes can happen. These mistakes can lead to serious injuries or even death. Even experienced doctors and nurses must be careful when performing an intubation. If they place the tube in the wrong place—such as the esophagus, which leads to the stomach instead of the lungs—the patient won’t get enough oxygen. Failing to monitor oxygen levels, waiting too long to intubate, or being rough during the procedure can also cause harm. Sometimes, poor training or miscommunication between medical staff leads to these avoidable errors.
Another possible error is when doctors fail to give the patient proper drugs to facilitate the intubation. In one recent medical malpractice case in Cook County (that led to a $43M award), an agitated patient was given ketamine to calm her down, but the doctor did not give her a paralytic drug. A paralytic is a powerful muscle relaxer used to prevent muscle movement during medical procedures and surgery. The end result was significant brain damage and the loss of a normal life. The lawsuit damages will help pay for life long care and loss of the ability to work.

"Extremely quick"
Extremely quick response. Even on a Sunday morning. I appreciate the expert advice and care that I received.
When intubation is performed incorrectly, the results can be devastating. A patient might suffer permanent brain damage if the brain goes too long without oxygen. Other times a hole might be made in the windpipe, or stomach contents might enter the lungs, which can lead to life-threatening infections or the need for more surgery. And in the worst case scenario, there is a wrongful death situation due to a mistake.
